Christ Designates Saint Roch as Patron Saint (1623-26), by Peter Paul Rubens and Atelier
Coordination: Karen Bonne @ Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels), 2024
Participated in selected stages of the treatment, including the consolidation of flaking paint, aqueous cleaning to remove accumulated surface dirt, and varnish removal to reveal the original colours and contrasts.
Apollo and the Muses (c. 1726), by Sir James Thornhill (1675/76–1734)
Coordination: Alice Tavares da Silva @ Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI, Cambridge), 2025
The treatment was carried out in situ, at Grimsthorpe Castle, and focused on stabilising and improving the appearance of the painting. Areas of flaking paint were consolidated, the surface was carefully cleaned to remove accumulated grime, and the varnish was resaturated to recover the painting’s depth and richness. Finally, paint losses were toned and retouched so that the composition could be appreciated without distraction while still respecting the integrity of the original materials.
Untitled (1972), by Vasco Costa (1917–1986)
Coordination: Diana Conde @ Diana Conde Conservação e Restauro (Private Studio, Lisbon), 2024
Treatment comprised the consolidation of flaking paint and the re-adhesion of detached paint flakes, followed by surface cleaning with an aqueous solution tailored to the painting’s sensitivity.
